5 tips for a sustainable bathroom
Sustainability: a mega hot topic. We also deal with this on a daily basis. Not surprising of course, we make sustainable toilet paper. Why is our toilet paper so sustainable? A while ago we wrote a blog about our choice for bamboo paper, read it if you are interested. However, we don't want to talk about that right now. For this blog, we want to think a bit bigger than just the toilet: the bathroom. Did you know that a few small changes can make a big difference? Choosing sustainable toilet paper is a small adjustment, but it activates a whole chain of positive impact! So how can you turn your bathroom into a sustainable paradise, in a few simple steps? In five tips we explain how!
Use sustainable materials
Okay, we know - this is a bit of a no-brainer, but it's a must-have! When you are looking for bathroom products, you have made a profit super quickly when you choose products made from sustainable materials. Think of our favourite: bamboo! Bamboo is a common material for bathroom accessories, from bath mats to toothbrushes and toilet brushes. Bamboo does not die after it has been cut, grows back super fast, absorbs more CO2 on average and deposits more oxygen on average than trees. A super sustainable raw material!
Bamboo bathroom accessories, such as bamboo bath boards, are also better choices than the plastic variety. Bamboo is a natural raw material, is biodegradable, and more importantly: it does not release microplastics. In addition, cotton is also a good alternative to bathroom textiles. Cotton is also a natural raw material that is biodegradable.
Water saving products
Just a few extra minutes, the water is so nice and warm and it's cold outside! We totally understand the feeling, but you can save a lot of water, energy and money by using a timer while showering. It takes some getting used to at first, but it really helps! So, set that kitchen timer for 5 minutes and blast through your shower concert in record time.
In addition to shorter showers, you can also save water by purchasing water-saving products. For example: shower heads with a low water flow, which help to save water. If you really want to make an investment, a water-saving toilet bowl might be interesting! This product uses less water during rinsing.
Energy-efficient lighting
This tip may seem a bit unnecessary, but we think it is at the base of a sustainable bathroom: LED lighting. In addition to being energy-efficient lighting (an LED lamp consumes up to 85% less power than a halogen lamp, and even 90% less power than an incandescent lamp, source: Milieucentraal), it also has a longer lifespan than the average halogen lamps or incandescent lamps: the perfect sustainable lighting to take the spotlight in during your shower concert!
Plastic-free care products
In your bathroom it's all about one thing: self-care! Nowadays, more and more sustainable alternatives are becoming easily available in this area. Think of sustainable razor blades, soap, shampoo and conditioner bars or plastic-free deodorant. Below we have listed our favorite brands of sustainable care products:
The plastic-free and natural products of HappySoaps
The skin care products from We Love The Planet
The vegan & 100% natural deodorant from Nuud
The sustainable razor blades from Bambaw

Eco-friendly cleaning products
Traditional cleaning products can not only be harmful to the environment, but also to your health. Natural cleaners, such as vinegar and baking soda, are safe alternatives. Circular supermarket Pieter Pot recently wrote a super interesting blog about what you can do with baking soda. These products can be used to clean your bathroom and are also much cheaper than traditional cleaning products. No time or desire to clean up with your own baking soda mixture? Then take a look at our personal cleaning favorite, Marcel’s Green Soap. You can use their plastic-free and natural products for your entire household!
